Born in Sterling, Kan., he graduated from Nickerson High School (Kansas), where he played on the 1939 state championship basketball team; graduated from Kansas State University, where he starred on the KSU football team and scored the decisive touchdown in the comeback victory over Nebraska. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps as First Lieutenant in the World War II.

In 1946, he moved to Elyria and was employed by Geisel Heating and Cooling as a salesman and furnace installer before becoming part owner of the company in 1958. He later became sole owner and relocated the company to West Broad Street, and remained at Geisel until 1981.

In 1984, he retired in Venice, Florida. Mr. Engelland was active in the Elyria Junior Chamber of Commerce, Little League North (coach and administrator), Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, Elyria American Legion, Kiwanis, and the Elyria Elks.

He enjoyed golfing, and he was a member of Oberlin Golf Club, Englewood Country Club and Capri Isles Golf Club, both in Florida. He also bowled and played bridge, and was an avid fan of high school football and basketball.
